REPORTS
FROM ALICIA LUCKSTED
(1) In late November,
the convention center was booked by two
gatherings on the same day: The TOW SHOW and A National Conference
for Social Studies Teachers: this was the most positive response
at the downtown vigil since the PeacePath! Quite a few suggested
that WIB should have a booth at the convention and we are looking
at that for next year. We had a chance
to meet and talk with a representative from the Justice Department's
Land
Mine Monitoring section.
(2) Just a couple weeks
ago, WIB downtown were joined on the corner by
lots of "orange" Ukrainians--those who favor the reforms
of the opposition
party. Thanks to WIB, they did not need to obtain a permit and there
was no police presence. The WIB vigil and the "Orange"
demonstration
went on side-by-side with no trouble at all.
(3) In mid-Nov I travelled
to Copenhagen for work, and arranged ahead
of time to meet up with WIB there. Their WIB group is closely connected
to WILPF and has similar
regular vigils as we do. While I was there
I attended their vigil held in combination with a protest against
hostilities by the US in Iraq, across from the US embassy. Annalise
(one of the organizers) also invited me to dinner. They all say
hello!
